Deccan Karnataka TourDestinations : Mumbai - Hyderabad - Gulbarga - Bijapur - Badami - Hospet - Hassan - Mysore - Mumbai Day 01 : Mumbai ![]() Morning arrive Mumbai. Meeting, assistance at airport and transfer to hotel ( check-in time 12 noon ). Lunch at hotel. Afternoon excursion to Elephanta Caves, famous due to the four rock cut temples on the island of ELEPHANTA. They are believed to have been cut out between 450 to 750 AD There is one main cave with a number of large sculptured panels all relating to Shiva, and a separate lingam shrine. Dinner and overnight at hotel. Day 02 : Mumbai - Hyderabad After breakfast transfer to airport for flight to Hyderabad. On arrival transfer to hotel. Lunch at hotel. PM. City sightseeing of Hyderabad visiting Charminar standing in the heart of the old walled city. This huge triumphal arch was built by Mohd. Quli Qutab Shah to commemorate the end of plague in Hyderabad. It is surrounded by lively bazaars. Macca Masjid is nearby considered to amongst the largest mosques in the world. Salarjung museum - this is India's answer to the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. It contains 35,000 exhibits drawn from all corners of the world including sculptures, wood carvings, religious objects, miniature paintings, armours etc. Dinner and overnight at hotel. Day 03 : Hyderabad Breakfast at hotel. AM. Excursion to Golconda Fort : the origins of the fort have been traced back to earlier Hindu periods of Deccan history when the Yadavas and later the Kakatiyas ruled this area. It remained capital for approx. 80 years when the court was moved to the new city of Hyderabad. The citadel itself is built on a granite hill 120 meters high and surrounded by battle-mented ramparts. The massive gates are studded with large pointed iron spikes. Unfortunately, many of the structures inside the citadel - the palaces, harems, arsenals, stables have suffered a great deal from past sieges but you get a good impression how it looked like originally. The tombs of the Qutab Shahi kings lie in the outer perimeter wall of Golconda, they are fairly small but graceful structures surrounded by landscaped gardens. Lunch at hotel. PM. At leisure. Dinner and overnight at hotel. ![]() Day 04 : Hyderabad - Gulbarga After breakfast proceed to Gulbarga enroute visiting Bidar. Bidar : Bidar Fort, the site of the former capital of the fifteenth century Bahamani kings, is a creation that mixes the Hindu and Muslim influences that are so much a part of this city. Bahamani Tombs - The interior paintings are beautiful. A great sense of grandeur but poorly maintained. The tomb of Ahmed Shah-al-Wali Bahamani is 107 feet high and built on a square plane, no external decoration but interior was once quite colourful. All other tombs are quite attractive. Evening arrive. Dinner and overnight at hotel. Day 05 : Gulbarga - Bijapur Breakfast at hotel. AM. Visit of Gulbarga : the town was the Bahamani capital from mid 14 till mid 15th century until it was transferred to Bidar. Its old fort is in a much deteriorated state, but has a number of interesting buildings inside. The Jama Masjid inside the fort is reputed to have been built by a Moorish architect in imitation of the great mosque in Cordova. The mosque is unique in India with a huge dome covering the whole area, four smaller ones at the corners 75 still smaller all around. PM. Proceed to Bijapur. Dinner and overnight at hotel. Day 06 : Bijapur Breakfast at hotel. Full day sightseeing of Bijapur. The city is the Agra of the south of India, full of ruined and still intact gems of the 15th to 17th century Muslim architecture, Mosque, mausoleums, palaces and fortifications. Like Agra, it has its world famous monuments, GOLGUMBAZ : This enormous structure with its vast hemispherical dome, said to be the world's second largest. BRAHIM ROZA : constructed at the height of Bijapur's prosperity. Unlike Golgumbaz it is impressive for its immensity and here the emphasis is on elegance and delicacy. Jama Masjid, The Citadel are other attractions. Lunch, dinner and overnight at hotel. Day 07 : Bijapur - Badami ![]() Breakfast at hotel and proceed to Badami. Lunch at hotel. PM. Visit of Badami : A charming village and the former second capital of the Chalukyas, is nestled between the red sandstone hills. The cave temples of Badami are astounding. All these temples are hewn out of solid rock, some as early as AD 550. Their setting is magical : carved into hills above a lovely reservoir with quaint, tiny temples dotting the edge. The four most important caves follow a set plan : a verandas with pillars, a hall with columns, and a small cell to enshrine the deity. Though the exteriors appear simple, with borders of grotesque dwarfs, the interiors are remarkable. Dinner and overnight at hotel. Day 08 : Badami Breakfast at hotel. AM. Excursion to Aihole. At Aihole, which was the capital between 4th and 7th century, you can see the Hindu temple architecture in its embryonic stage. From the earliest Ladkhan Temple to the later and more complex structures like the Kulingudi and Durgigudi temples. The Durgigudi is particularly interesting and probably unique in India. Most of the temples here are in good state of preservation. Lunch at hotel. PM. Excursion to Pattadkal, this town reached the height of its glory during the 7th and the 8th century when most of the temples were here built. It was not only the second capital of Badami Chalukyans, but the place where all coronations took place. The most important monuments here, the Lokeshwari or Virupaksh temple, is a huge structure with sculptures that narrates the episodes from the Hindu epics, Ramayana and Mahabhrata. It also throws the light on the social life of Chalukyans. Dinner and overnight at hotel. Day 09 : Badami - Hospet Breakfast at hotel and proceed to Hospet. Lunch at hotel. PM visit of Hampi ( Vijayanagar ) : Hampi is the shell of a colossal empire. The traveller’s then found it " as large as Rome " and " the best provided city in the world ". The Virupaksha Temple, dedicated to Shiva and now considered the most sacred structure in Hampi, is still active. On the surrounding hills are more temple complexes. Vitthala temple complex is the highest glory of Vijayanagara architecture. Dedicated to Vishnu, the walled rectangular courtyard contains the renowned chariot with lotus-shaped wheels - the entire vehicle intricately carved from a single granite stone. Hazara Rama Complex, in a rectangular compound is dedicated to Vishnu. It was for the private worship of the king. Dinner and overnight at hotel. Day 10 : Hospet- Hassan ![]() After breakfast proceed to Hassan. Lunch will be enroute. There is a possibility of visiting the villages on the way. Dinner and overnight at hotel. Day 11 : Hassan Breakfast at hotel. AM. Excursion to Belur : a flourishing city under the Hoysala kings in the twelfth century. The Belur Temple of the Lord Channakeshava, still a functioning temple dedicated to this Vishnu incarnate, stands almost as perfectly reserved as the day it was completed. Carved of soapstone, the Belur temple is like Somnathpur in design : star shaped, with the squat temple set on a platform. At Belur we find gods and goddesses in all their varied aspects & incarnations and scenes from the great Indian religion epics. We find dancers, musicians, and beautiful women dressing and adorning themselves. Lunch at hotel. PM. Excursion to Halebid : the Hoysaleshwara temple was constructed a decade after the Belur Temple by the same king. Here are the Apsaras or the celestial maidens, clothed in jewels, with bracelets on each arm, sitting or standing in graceful postures. Dinner and overnight at hotel. Day 12 : Hassan - Mysore Breakfast at hotel and proceed to Mysore. Enroute visiting Sravanabelgola - presided over and dominated by the colossal statue of the Jain saint Gomateshwara. His monolithic image, 57 feet tall, watched over pilgrims for 1000 years. The gigantic image rises atop one of Sravanabelgola's two hills, Indragiri, where many smaller statues and a beautiful temple stand. A rock-hewn stairway of 614 steps leads to the summit and the monolith. Lunch at hotel. PM. Visit of Mysore : the principal resi dence of the former royal family, which makes it every inch a princely city. Maharaja's Palace - a massive edifice that took 15 years to build on the site of the former wooden palace destroyed by fire. Everything looks palatial in Mysore. Chamundi Hill - named after the royal family's goddess, Chamundi. Dinner and overnight at hotel. Day 13 : Mysore Breakfast at hotel. AM. Excursion to Srirangapatnam - an island fortress between two branches of the Cauvery River. Visit the fort and its imposing surroundings. The Sri Ranganatha temple is about 1000 years old. The ruins of Tipu's fortified palaces and the Sultan's favourite mosque, Jama Masjid, with its minarets. Outside the fort are the Summer Palace of Tipu Sultan. From outside does not look very impressive but once inside you think otherwise. The Gumbaz, a beautiful monument. In the centre of a garden stands the cream-coloured Gumbaz on its black marble pillars. The interior is lacquered with Tipu's tiger stripe emblem, and doors of ebony inlaid with ivory. Lunch at hotel. Late afternoon visit the Brindavan Gardens. The garden is exquisitely designed and alive with bright flowers and silvery fountains. In the evening the gardens are illuminated and hundreds of fountains and pools of all colours, size and shapes bring out the best. Dinner and overnight at hotel. Day 14 : Mysore - Bangalore - Mumbai After breakfast proceed to Bangalore enroute visiting Somnathpur temple - the Sri Chamakeshwara temple built around 1260 AD during the heyday of Hoysala Kings. It is one of the most beautiful and interesting buildings in the world. The walls of the star shaped temple are literally covered with superb sculptures in stone depicting various scenes from Ramayana, Mahabharata, Bhagvata Gita and the life times of the Hoysala kings. Lunch at hotel in Bangalore. Transfer to airport for flight to Mumbai. On arrival transfer to hotel for dinner. Immediately after dinner transfer to international airport for flight to home. |
