Carved of soapstone, the Belur temple is like Somnathpur in design : star shaped, with the squat temple set on a platform. At Belur we find gods and goddesses in all their varied aspects & incarnations and scenes from the great Indian religion epics. We find dancers, musicians, and beautiful women dressing and adorning themselves. Overnight stay at hotel. Day 04 : Hassan Breakfast at hotel. AM. Excursion to Halebid : the Hoysaleshwara temple was constructed a decade after the Belur Temple by the same king. At Halebid the sculptor's virtuosity reaches its peak - one cannot explain the carvings, but it is possible to say that these artists were able to treat stone like wood or ivory. The friezes and mythical beasts and swans are breathtaking. The largest frieze is the most exuberant ; based on a heavenly theme. Here are the Apsaras or the celestial maidens, clothed in jewels, with bracelets on each arm, sitting or standing in graceful postures. PM. Excursion to Arsikere. Beautiful temple from Hoysala period, very well preserved. Afterwards see the village activities. Overnight at hotel. Day 05 : Hassan - Mysore ![]() Breakfast at hotel and proceed to Mysore. Enroute visiting Sravanabelgola - presided over and dominated by the colossal statue of the Jain saint Gomateshwara. His monolithic image, 57 feet tall, watched over pilgrims for 1000 years. The gigantic image rises atop one of Sravanabelgola's two hills, Indragiri, where many smaller statues and a beautiful temple stand. A rock-hewn stairway of 614 steps leads to the summit and the monolith. PM. Visit of Mysore : the principal residence of the former royal family, which makes it every inch a princely city. Maharaja's Palace - a massive edifice that took 15 years to build on the site of the former wooden palace destroyed by fire. The palace, one of the biggest of its kind in India, is in the Indo-Sarcenic style - a gigantic synthesis of Hindu and Islamic architecture. The entrance, gateways, domes, arches, turrets, lovely Hoysala-like carvings, chandeliers and etched window panes - are all in magnificent profusion. Everything looks palatial in Mysore. Chamundi Hill - named after the royal family's goddess, Chamundi. On the way up is a 16-feet Nandi ( Shiva's holy bull ) constructed in the 1600s from a single piece of granite. The Sri Chamundeswari Temple is dedicated to the royal Wadiyar family's titular deity. Overnight at hotel. Day 06 : Mysore Breakfast at hotel. AM. Excursion to Srirangapatnam - an island fortress between two branches of the Cauvery River. Visit the fort and its imposing surroundings. The Sri Ranganatha temple is about 1000 years old. The ruins of Tipu's fortified palaces and the Sultan's favourite mosque, Jama Masjid, with its minarets. Outside the fort are the Summer Palace of Tipu Sultan. From outside does not look very impressive but once inside you think otherwise. The Gumbaz, a beautiful monument. In the centre of a garden stands the cream-coloured Gumbaz on its black marble pillars. The interior is lacquered with Tipu's tiger stripe emblem, and doors of ebony inlaid with ivory. PM. Excursion to Somnathpur temple - the Sri Chamakeshwara temple built around 1260 AD during the heyday of Hoysala Kings. It is one of the most beautiful and interesting buildings in the world.
