South India Cultural TourPlaces to See : Hyderabad - Gulbarga - Bijapur - Hospet - Bangalore Day 1: Hyderabad - Gulbarga ( 214 kms approximate) Drive to Gulbarga on the Deccan Plateau via Bidar, the ancient Capital of the Bahmani-dynasty with two forts and several royal tombs. The afternoon awaits you with the sightseeing of the Citadel of Gulbarga which has no less than 15 watchtowers and houses a mosque for which Cordoba (Spain) is said to be the model. Overnight at Hotel Sun International - Gulbarga Day 2: Gulbarga - Bijapur (about 145 km) Early in the morning start to Bijapur one of the most important cities with Indo-Islamic architecture in this region. Bijapur is the Islamic name for Vijayapuram, the "City of Victory". The monumental building is the Gol Gumbaz, a 17th century mausoleum with the largest dome in the world and fantastic acoustics. Famous, too, is the beautiful arched Jama Masjid. We can imagine the power of Bijapur's erstwhile kings while walking along the citywalls and the massive fortifications, where a cannon of 710 mm, cast in 1551, is still intact. Marvellous stone carvings and sculptures adorn the tomb of Taj Sultana. Overnight at Hotel Madhuvan International - Bijapur Day 3: Bijapur - Hospet (about 200km) En route to Hospet are situated the three capitals of the Chalukya-dynasty:Aihole, Pattadakal and Badami. Aihole was the first capital from 6th to 8th century and is historically known as the cradle of Hindu temple architecture. Today it is a picturesque little village with about 70 temples. The group of temples at Pattadakal, incomparable gracious and a fantasy in stone represents the climax of the early Western Chalukyan architecture. Badami, the second Capital of the Chalukyas, is magnificently nestled in a canyon and it's cave temples display the full range of religious sects which have grown on Indian soil. Overnight at Malligi Tourist Home - Hospet. Day 4: Hospet - Hampi - Hospet (about 17 km) Discover the numerous ruins and temples of Hampi, Capital of the once mighty Vijayanagar Empire, and one of the most interesting and least visited historical sites in India. Hampi has magical quality and the ruins are superb, set in a strange hill country strewn with enormous, rounded boulders. The most important monuments are the Shiva temple with a 50 m high Gopuram and a large statue of Narashima. Overnight at Malligi Tourist Home - Hospet. Day 5: Hospet - Bangalore ( about 370 km) En route visit the impressive Fort of Chitradurga. Arrive Bangalore late afternoon. |
