Places to See : Calcutta - Gauhati - Shillong - Bagdogra - Darjeeling
- Siliguri - Bangalore - Mysore - Ooty - Bombay
Duration : 14 Nights / 15 Days
An Ideal tea itinerary must include the gardens of Darjeeling, Assam, Duars
and the Nilgiri. One should also try to include a tea auction in Siliguri
, Gauhati, or Calcutta. Though the Indian Tea faces stiff competition from
the Srilankan and African tea but when it comes to quality the concierge
will go for the Darjeeling Tea only. An evening in one of the numerous tea
planters exclusive clubs is a very different experience. During the tour
one whole day is planned to be spent in one of the lovely gardens so that
you can well experience the life of a planter and the worker in the tea
industry. The lunch will be organised at the manager's bungalow.
Day 01.
Arrive Calcutta , transfer to one of the old colonial hotels. In the afternoon,
walk through the wholesale local market of tea. Today, most of it is controlled
by the business community from Rajasthan. The tea-board also has a large
establishment in Calcutta and it would be worth paying them a visit. The
tea board also organises tea tasting seasons for the international buyers.
If it is possible then we would organise that if there happen to be a tea
tasting season, you can go and watch the fun.
Day 02.
Flight to Gauhati (Assam) and drive to Shillong through some beautiful plantations.
Enroute, visit one of the renowned tea estates of Assam. Hotel in Shillong.
Day 03.
A full day to explore Shillong and its surroundings.
Day 04.
Drive back to Gauhati. Hotel. In the afternoon undertake a boat tour on
the mighty Bhramaputra river to visit the island temple. Also visit the
tea auction house. Where you will encounter 100s of businessmen, some of
them in their traditional attire and carrying large briefcases full of money
as almost all the transactions at the auction is on "cash only basis" .
Day 05.
Morning visit the Khamkhiya temple and the State Museum. In the afternoon
flight to Bagdogra and on to Darjeeling by road.
Day 06.
Early morning excursion to Tiger Hill to watch the sunrise and then visit
the Buddhist
monastery in Ghoom. After breakfast excursion to Happy Valley
Tea estate, one of the prime estates known for high quality tea. The lunch
will be arranged in the manager's bungalow. In the afternoon drive back
to Darjeeling. In the evening, cocktail and dinner (if possible) at the
"Planter's club" where the welcome drink is the "planter's punch". Here
you will have the opportunity to meet some of the tea-planters and people
associated with tea.
Day 07.
In the morning, explore Darjeeling bazaar, which smells tea of all kinds
and colour. In the afternoon, a short sightseeing of Darjeeling. Including
a visit to the Himalayan Mountaineering School.
Day 08.
After breakfast, take the first toy train towards Siliguri. The history
of the toy train is the history of Tea in Darjeeling. You ride for about
2 hours and then the bus will pick you up for the rest of the journey to
Bagdogra airport. Flight to Calcutta. If the flight is in time you can undertake
a very rewarding boat trip on the Ganges river as the lights just begin
to come up. Dinner and overnight in the hotel.
Day 09.
Today, the jet will take you across the Indian plateau to Bangalore the
garden city, Bangalore. Transfer to hotel. In the afternoon sight seeing
of Bangalore.
Day 10.
Drive to Mysore. Hotel. In the afternoon sight seeing of the palace and
Chamundi temple situated on a hill overlooking the city.
Day 11.
Morning excursion to Somnathpur, to see one of the most beautiful temples
of the Hoysala period. Afternoon free to explore Mysore or relax.
Day 12.
Drive to Ooty via Bandipur and Madumallai. Enroute visit one of the tea
estates in the "Nilgiri" mountains. Evening free to explore Ooty.
Day 13.
A short toy train ride will bring you to Conoor, the ride is through beautiful
valleys and tea plantations. The bus will take you to one of the tea estates.
Rest of the day, you will spent at the plantation. Drive back to Ooty. In
the evening a welcome reception at the planter's club. Followed by dinner.
Day 14.
Drive to Coimbatore to connect the flight to Bombay. Hotel.
Day 15.
Final transfer to the airport to connect the international flight back home
