Kumaon Region TourDuration : 11 Nights / 12 Days The beautiful regions of Kumaon, with their tree-topped ridges, snow-covered peaks, rippling streams, foaming torrents, famous mountain lakes and smiling valleys have, since time immemorial, been a heaven of refuge for all, soldier, sailor, beggar-man or king. A charming episode from Mahabharata recounts just this very aspect. Five thousand years ago, the emperor Yudhishthir was driven from the throne by his enemies and had to take refuge in the forest of Himalayas. His Queen inquired " O King! How is it that most virtuous of men should suffer so much misery? " Said he King " Behold O Queen! the Himalayas, how grand and beautiful they are, I love them. "Through the ages these words of the King have echoed in the minds of millions of men. Grand and magnificent, they gave wings to the imagination, peace to the mind and tranquillity to the soul. With an eternal calling for all, its snow-capped peaks are a challenge to mountaineers, while the immense sylvan grandeur of the vast herbarium invites, not only trekers, but writers, artists, poets to whom it communicates intense emotions, elegance, perpetual bliss and majesty. Mahatma Gandhi said, " The enchanting beauty of the Himalayas, their bracing climate and the soothing green that envelopes you leaves nothing more to be desired". With nearly 80 Himalayan peaks of over 6096 meters towering over them and looked upon, from the earliest times, as the home of the gods - Indra, Siva and Varuna. The Kumaon hills and their rivers portray splendour in all seasons. Day 01 : Delhi Morning arrive Delhi. Meeting, assistance at airport and transfer to hotel ( check-in time 12 noon ).PM. Sightseeing of Old Delhi : Red Fort - the sandstone walls of the fort extend for 2 kms and vary in height from 18 meters on the river side to 33 meters on the city side. The Hall of Public Audiences, The Hall of Private Audiences, the Royal Baths, Moti Masjid - the Pearl Mosque built by Aurangzeb for himself are the important portions of the immense fort. Overnight at hotel. ![]() Day 02 : Delhi Breakfast at hotel. AM. Sightseeing of New Delhi : Laxmi Narayan Temple - garishly coloured modern temple was erected by the industrialist Birla. India Gate - the 42 meter high stone ` Arch of Triumph ', erected in the memory of the Indian soldiers who died in the first World War. Qutab Minar - the buildings in the complex date from the onset of Moslem rule in India and are fine examples of the early Afghan architecture. PM at leisure. Overnight at hotel. Day 03 : Delhi - Nainital After breakfast proceed to Nainital. Lunch enroute . Evening arrive Nainital. Overnight at hotel. Day 04 : Nainital Breakfast at hotel. Full day sightseeing of Nainital and surroundings : P. Barron says " It is by far the best site I have witnessed in the course of a 1500 mile trek in the Himalayas ". Bhimtal - named after one of the Pandava brothers, this is the largest lake in the district, 1700 meters by 454 meters making it 265 meters longer than Nainital Lake. Naukuchiatal - a heaven for the fishing enthusiasts, this fine lake with nine corners is four kms to the north east of Bhimtal. Bhowali - is an ideal place for those in search of fragrant pines, for a days outing, weekend of for whole summer. Hanuman Garhi - an ecstatic spot reputed for its glorious sunset. The Hanuman temple here has turned it lately into a pilgrim centre as well. Near the temple are the Govt. Astronomical Observatory and the Satellite tracking centre. Overnight at hotel Day 05 : Nainital - Ranikhet ![]() Breakfast at hotel and proceed to Ranikhet enroute visiting KAINCHI TEMPLE - a modern pilgrimage centre. Here is a temple constructed in modern times that has caught the fancy of westerners and easterners alike. It is visited by both the tourists and pilgrims. Baba Neem Karauli is popular with all races, among his devotees are a number of young Europeans and Americans who come to India in quest of spiritual peace. PM. Excursion to DWARHAT - home of a cluster of 55 ancient temples. It is divided into eight distinct groups constructed in the Indo Aryan, Maru Pratihara or Nagara type. The temples of Kumaon are constructed in typical north India style with the curvilinear ` sikhara ', or spire inclining towards and terminating in a square section. The Badrinath Temple is of the Rekhadeal type - the sikhara is embellished with ` rathas ' or vertical projections which give the optical impression of a ` Rekha ', or continuous line. Overnight at hotel. Day 06 : Ranikhet - Almora After breakfast proceed to Almora enroute visiting Katarmal Temple. The Sun Temple at Katarmal is over 800 years old. The temple is situated on one of the four hills which surround Almora. PM sightseeing of Almora and surroundings. Kalimath just within hiking distance from Almora presents a vision of beauty as it unfolds a picture post card with Almora on one side and the snowy peaks on the other. Kasardevi, is an old temple atop a hill overlooking the snowy heights beyond, dedicated to goddess. Chitai temple commanding a view is the temple of Golla - one of the many in Almora. Overnight at hotel. Day 07 : Almora - Bageshwar ![]() After breakfast proceed to Bageshwar enroute visiting Baijnath Temple. Baijnath Temples - at a height of 1125 meters are the ancient temples not only of Shiva, Ganesh and Parvati but also to Chandika, Kuber, Surya, Brahma and Mahisasur Mardini which portrays the slaying of the bull headed demon by the goddess Kali. Situated on the Gomti's green banks, in the lush idyllic Garur valley is the main temple of Baijnath dating back to the 13th century AD, where in the sanctum sanatorium, are the life size statues of the Holy Trio - Shiva, Parvati and Ganesh. PM visit the temples of Bageshwar, a pilgrim centre. Filled with the religious aura and peace of soul and mind, the visitor inevitably becomes a pilgrim and his steps lead him to the confluence of the sacred Gomti and Sarju. Overnight stay at Tourist Bungalow. Day 08 : Bageshwar - Pithoragarh After breakfast proceed to Pithoragarh. PM visit of Pithoragarh. This is small town on the border to cross western side of Nepal. The small streets are very lively and worth visiting. We also visit the small local temples. Overnight at Tourist Bungalow. Day 09 : Pithoragarh - Jageshwar - Nainital After breakfast proceed to Nainital enroute visiting Jageshwar. The temples of Jageshwer are situated in a beautiful narrow valley, surrounded by a dense forest of magnificent deodar monarchs. From 7th century onwards, there was a great temple building activity under the Katyuri kings, who rivalled the Chalukyas in the south. They built mainly in the Almora and Pithoragarh districts - in Jageshwer - they erected approx. 200 shrines. On top of the wagon shaped roof, are two flanking squatted lions facing the cardinal points. Nataraja temples built in the 8th century are also 35 feet in height. Evening arrive Nainital. Overnight at Tourist Bungalow. ![]() Day 10 : Nainital - Delhi After breakfast proceed to Delhi. Evening arrive. Overnight stay at hotel. Day 11 : Delhi Breakfast at hotel. Day at leisure or optional full day excursion to Agra. Overnight at hotel. Day 12 : Delhi Early morning transfer to airport for flight. |
