The art of handling of clay called Pottery was one of the original skills known to the Indians. From time immemorial, lumps of clay were hand -moulded to form toys and deities of worship. The advent of the Potter's wheel gave man the task of making beautifully shaped pots for his personal use. The movement of the wheel and the pressure exerted by the hands on the clay gives new shapes and forms. Pottery is the measure of a country's civilization. Being one of the oldest crafts, man has expressed his feelings and his aesthetics in clay. A piece of pottery has a visual message in its shape and colour. It is the most sensual of all arts. It is not only to be looked at, but also to be handled carefully.
The excellent handmade pottery and clayware in India is gaining fame and popularity in the world for its innovative designs. The craftsperson here have evolved a style of their own by raising pattern with the use of thick slips into a light relief, glazes in warm shades of autumnal colors like orange, brown, and light red have also been developed by them. Floral designs in sky-blue are worked against a white background. Surahis, large sized containers, jars, stools, tiles, earthenware dipped in vegetable colors are some of the famous pottery work of India. Beautiful pottery and other ware made of ceramics, is also one of the famous Indian buys.
In Uttar Pradesh various places famous for the clay work like Khurja, Rampur for surahis, Nizamabad in Azamgarh, Alwar, Jaipur, Bikaner in Rajasthan, Kangra in Himachal is rich in clay wares, Khanapur in Karnataka is renowned for its large containers and jars, Kutch and Saurashtra in Gujarat is also famous for earthenware. Other parts of country are Haryana, Tamil Nadu, Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.
